The PlayStation 2 is an extremely powerful console in terms of fanbase. As long as developers get money from it, games will still be made. On the other hand, some developers - namely Activision - believe that the constant flow of games coming from the PS2 is hurting the current generation. It's currently still selling very well for a decade-old console. Last year, it sold over 5 million units, which is simply unfathomable for a console that old. It simply won't die, and while it was benefiting Sony before, it is no longer. The shear sales of the PS2 today is something that is holding Sony back from more PS3s being sold. While the PS3 is actually doing very well now, outselling the Xbox 360 worldwide every month (and is currently ahead by over 500,000 units in 2010), the PS2 is just getting in the way. Currently, Activision stopped making music games for the PS2. However, they are still making more games, which is still an indication that people can't seem to stray away from it. In my personal opinion, Sony created a monster and they have yet to figure out how to stop it (at least without angering the audience). |
